Volleyball: close-fitting kit that has to take a dive
Volleyball kit sits closer to the body than anything else we make, and it meets a hard floor several times a set. Those two facts decide the fabric: light enough to move in, with enough stretch to move with a player rather than against them, and enough substance to survive the abrasion.
It is also the sport where women’s-specific cuts are the norm rather than the exception, which is worth saying out loud because plenty of suppliers still treat them as a variant.
Stretch, and why two-way is not enough
A close-fitting garment on a body that is reaching overhead needs to give in every direction at once. Two-way stretch gives across the body only, which is fine on a loose cut and noticeably restrictive on a fitted one. We specify four-way for volleyball tops as a default rather than an upgrade.
The libero top is the other thing unique to this sport. It has to contrast clearly and it has to look like part of the same set, which is only achievable if it comes out of the same production run — a mismatched libero shirt is the most visible uniform error in the sport.

What an indoor court asks of a garment
Six specification points that are volleyball-specific rather than general teamwear.
- Stretch
- Four-way as a default rather than an upgrade. A close-fitting garment on a body reaching overhead needs to give in every direction at once, and two-way gives across the body only.
- Weight
- Light. Indoor halls are warm and a set is continuous movement, so this is the sport where the lightest workable fabric usually wins.
- Abrasion
- The court floor is the wear surface. A garment specified only for airflow loses at the hip and forearm within a season.
- Libero contrast
- Produced in the same run as the rest of the set. Ordered separately it is a visibly different garment on the one player everybody is looking at.
- Cut
- Women’s-specific as the default request in this sport rather than the variant, and worth stating explicitly on any order.
- Base layers
- Ordered as protective equipment rather than apparel. A libero going to the floor twenty times a match is wearing it for skin, not for warmth.
The libero shirt, and why it is a production question
The rules require a libero to contrast clearly with the rest of the squad, which sounds like a colour decision and is actually a manufacturing one. A contrasting shirt that came from a different run, in a different dye lot, on a different day, is a garment that reads as belonging to another team rather than as the designated player on this one.
It is also the single most watched shirt on the court, because the position exists to be identified at a glance. Any inconsistency in it is inconsistency in the most examined garment a volleyball program owns.
So it is specified with the set and produced with the set, which is the same reasoning that governs everything we make as a matched set rather than assembled pieces — it just happens to be more visible here than anywhere else.

Do you make women’s-specific cuts?
Yes, and for volleyball it is what we quote by default. Say so if you want a unisex block instead.
Can the libero top match exactly?
It can be produced in the same run to the same references, which is as close as manufacturing allows. Ordered separately later, it will be close but not identical.
What about knee pads and accessories?
Those are stocked items rather than made ones. The volleyball site lists what it carries.
Do you make women's-specific cuts as standard?
Yes, and in this sport it is the default request rather than the variant. The pattern differs through the shoulder and body; grading a men's pattern down produces a small men's garment, not a women's one.
Can the libero shirt come from the same run?
It should. A contrasting shirt produced separately, in a different dye lot on a different day, reads as belonging to another team rather than as the designated player on this one — and it is the most watched shirt on the court.
Is four-way stretch standard or an upgrade?
Standard. A close-fitting garment on a body reaching overhead needs to give in every direction at once, and two-way stretch gives across the body only. Specifying it as an upgrade is how a set ends up restrictive at exactly the wrong moment.
What about abrasion from the court floor?
It is the wear surface in this sport, so it drives the fabric choice as much as airflow does. A garment specified for breathability alone loses at the hip and forearm within a season, which is why we do not simply pick the lightest fabric available.
Do you make knee pads and base layers?
Base layers, yes, and they are specified as protective equipment rather than apparel — a libero going to the floor twenty times a match wears them for skin, not warmth. Hard protective gear is not something we manufacture.
Can you match our school colours exactly?
Against a supplied reference, yes. Pantone numbers or a physical sample both work. A colour taken from a screenshot of last year's team photo does not, and it is worth spending ten minutes finding the real reference before production rather than after.
How do you handle numbering rules?
We produce to the size and placement the governing body specifies, and we will tell you if a design puts a number where the rules will not accept it. A rejected uniform is a forfeited match, which is a more expensive mistake than a redesign.
Do beach and indoor use the same garments?
No. Beach specification is lighter, cut differently and is far more exposed to UV and salt. Ordering indoor kit for a beach programme is a decision that shows up by mid-season.
What is the smallest volleyball order you take?
It varies by garment rather than by sport. Tell us the roster and the pieces and we will give you the real number for that specification instead of a headline minimum that turns out not to apply.
