Custom Name Football Jerseys — the roster is the risky part, not the print
A named jersey is the one garment a player keeps. It is also the one where a mistake is permanent: a number can be re-pressed, a name that is spelled wrong is a remade shirt, and nobody notices until it is handed out in front of the squad.
Almost every one of those mistakes happens before the artwork stage. It happens in how the roster reached us.

Why a photograph of a roster is the problem
The commonest way a name list arrives is a photograph of a whiteboard or a clipboard. It feels faster than typing. It is the single largest source of remakes we see.
Handwriting turns MCCLINTOCK into MCCLINTOCH, drops the space in VAN DYKE, and makes an O and a D indistinguishable at the end of a long surname. None of that is visible on the proof either, because the proof is drawn from what we were sent.
A typed list — one row per player, name exactly as it should be printed, number, size — removes the whole category. It takes a coach ten minutes and it is the highest-return ten minutes in the order.
What a football back panel can actually hold
Six constraints that decide how a name is laid out before anybody chooses a font.
- Character count
- A long surname arches or condenses. Past about twelve characters the letters narrow enough to lose legibility from the touchline, which is the only distance that matters.
- The number below it
- Name and number share the panel. On a football jersey the number is the larger of the two by rule, so the name gets what is left rather than the other way round.
- Shoulder pads
- The panel curves over pads once it is worn. A name set too close to the yoke disappears into that curve on a big player.
- Arch or straight
- Arched reads better on long names; straight reads better on short ones. It is a per-roster decision, not a per-team one, and mixing them looks deliberate rather than sloppy.
- Prefixes and accents
- Van, Mc, O’, De La, and accented characters all need confirming in writing. Assuming a house style here is how a family name gets changed.
- Case
- All caps is standard and is what most associations expect. Mixed case is available and worth confirming against your league before it is drawn.
Sublimated, not pressed — and on this garment it matters more
A football jersey is grabbed. The back panel takes hands, helmets and the ground, and anything sitting on the surface of it is being pulled at every play.
Pressed vinyl lettering on a football back typically starts lifting at a corner between weeks three and eight. On a named jersey that is worse than on a numbered one, because the letters are smaller and a single lifted letter reads as damage rather than wear.
Sublimation puts the colour inside the fibre, so there is no edge to lift. The trade-off is that it has to be decided before the garment is made rather than added afterwards, which is why the roster matters so early. The mechanics are in how sublimation puts colour into fibre.

How should we send the names?
Typed, one row per player, with the name exactly as it should be printed, plus number and size. A photograph of a handwritten roster is the largest single source of remade shirts we see.
What is the character limit on a name?
There is no hard cap, but past about twelve characters the letters have to narrow or arch, and legibility from the touchline drops. We will show you the layout at proof rather than quietly condensing it.
Can we use mixed case rather than all caps?
Yes. All caps is the standard and what most associations expect, so confirm mixed case against your league before we draw it — some specify capitals.
How do you handle names like Van Dyke or O’Brien?
We confirm them in writing before drawing, spaces and apostrophes included. Applying a house style to a family name without asking is not something we will do by default.
Are the names printed or stitched?
Sublimated into the fibre. On a back panel that gets grabbed every play, pressed lettering lifts at a corner within a couple of months, and a single lifted letter reads as damage.
Can we add a player mid-season?
Yes, and the stored roster file is what makes the new shirt match rather than approximate. Without it the match is made against a description months later.
Does the name go above or below the number?
Above, in the standard layout, and the number is the larger of the two by rule in most associations — so the name works with the space that is left.
Will a long name still be readable over pads?
That is the real test, and it is why we set names clear of the yoke. The panel curves over pads once worn, and a name set too high disappears into that curve on a bigger player.
Can different players have different layouts?
Arched for long names and straight for short ones is a legitimate per-roster choice and looks deliberate. Mixing them at random does not.
What is the minimum order for named jerseys?
It is set per garment rather than per name — personalisation does not change the minimum. Send the roster and the garment and we will give you the number that applies.
