Numbering is the one part of a football jersey with a rule book behind it. Height, placement, contrast and even which numbers a position may wear are written down by the association, and they are checked.
A uniform turned away at inspection is not a design problem. It is a forfeited game, and it is discovered on the day, in front of everybody.

What the rule book actually specifies
The six things associations write down. The exact figures vary, which is why we ask which body you play under.
- Front height
- Typically 8 inches. It is measured on the digit, not on the outline around it, which is where a design that looked compliant fails.
- Back height
- Typically 10 inches, and larger than the front on purpose — it is read from further away.
- Contrast
- The number must contrast with the jersey body. A tone-on-tone number is a design many associations will not accept, however good it looks.
- Position ranges
- Several bodies restrict number ranges by position. A design is fine; a roster that puts a lineman in a skill-position number is not.
- Outline and shadow
- Allowed by most, restricted by some, and they change the measured height. Worth confirming rather than assuming.
- Sleeve or shoulder numbers
- Optional in most codes and specified in a few. If your association requires them, they are part of the layout, not an extra.
Why we ask which association before we draw
High school federations, youth leagues and college conferences do not share one rule. A layout that passes in one is refused in another, and the difference is often two inches of digit height or whether an outline counts toward it.
So the first question on a numbering order is not what font you want. It is who you play under. With that, the layout is drawn to their figures and the question of compliance never arises.
Where a design would fail, we say so before it is made rather than after. That is a cheaper conversation than a redesign, and far cheaper than a forfeit.
Numbers are the part that fails first when they are pressed on
A number is the largest piece of decoration on a football jersey, and on a pressed garment that means it is the largest thing that can lift. It goes at a corner, usually between weeks three and eight, and once one corner has gone the rest follows quickly.
It is also on the panel that gets grabbed. A receiver being pulled down by the shirt is a number being pulled at the edge, several times a game.
Sublimated numbering has no edge to lift because the colour is in the fibre. Twill is the other durable answer and reads differently — raised, physical, and repairable, which print is not. The trade-off is set out in how tackle twill is built up.

How big do the numbers have to be?
Commonly 8 inches on the front and 10 on the back, but it is set by your association rather than by us. Tell us which body you play under and the layout is drawn to their figures.
Is the height measured with the outline?
On the digit, not the outline — which is where designs that looked compliant fail. A shadow or outline can add visible size without adding measured height.
Can the number be the same colour as the jersey?
Most associations require contrast, so a tone-on-tone number with a thin outline is refused more often than not. It is one of the designs we will flag before production.
Do you handle sleeve or shoulder numbers?
Yes, and if your association requires them they are part of the layout rather than an addition. Most codes make them optional.
What about position number ranges?
Several associations restrict ranges by position. The design is not the problem; the roster is. Check the assignment before numbers are allocated.
Printed or stitched numbers?
Sublimated for durability — no edge to lift on a panel that gets grabbed. Twill is the other durable answer, raised and repairable, and reads quite differently.
What happens if two players have the same number?
It goes into production that way unless somebody catches it. We flag duplicates when we spot them; the roster is the only reliable place to catch them.
Can we change a number mid-season?
Yes, as a single garment against the stored specification, so it matches the rest of the set. Reordering from a description months later does not reliably match.
Do youth leagues have the same rules?
Usually looser, and sometimes none at all. High school and college are where the enforcement is, which is why we ask rather than assume.
Will you tell us if our design will fail?
Yes, before it is made. A redesign is cheaper than a reprint and far cheaper than a uniform being turned away at inspection.
